Personal Strategic Plan

How do you create a personal strategic plan? How do you live your life with purpose and direction?

1️⃣ Determine what you ultimately want to do with your life. My Want: Travel first class, sightsee, and play golf.

2️⃣ Determine how you could get someone to pay for that, so you don’t have to. My Plan: Companies pay for a day-long visit of coaching, speaking, and training. I stay in that area for a week, sightseeing and golfing.

3️⃣ Determine what you have to look like for someone to pay for that. My Expectation: Companies will pay for a published #author and accomplished #speaker with a #PhD, strong business #experience, and #certifications, who had a strong #network of connections.

4️⃣ Determine the gap between where you are and how long it will take to get there. My Gap: No degree, never published, only experience in the military, strong military network only, just starting out with Toastmasters, and no certifications. Estimated time to close the gap: 20 years.

Developing your personal strategic plan is really just that simple.

20 years ago, I started on my journey — a journey of living my life with purpose and direction; not on autopilot.

Breakthrough Silos

Breaking ⛏ Through Siloed  Organizations  First Requires Leadership Awareness! 類

Silos exist in practically every company, business, and organization. For profit or non profit … doesn’t matter. I’ve even identified silos in solo proprietorships.

The natural tendency of leaders is to “tear down the silos.”

Oh, I’m sure you’ve heard it all before … maybe you’ve even said it.

Everyone knows silos are bad!!!

Right?

Unfortunately, very few know why silos exist in the first place.

Unfortunately, very few understand why and who created the silos.

And, unfortunately, very few understand why playing “whack a silo” in your company doesn’t work!

The first step in dealing with silos in your organization is to learn why they formed in the first place and why you’ll NEVER get rid of them.

I challenge you to read Overcoming Organizational Myopia and learn not only why they form, but how to deal with them.

Increase your awareness!!!

Volunteer Leadership

Want to be a great leader…learn to lead volunteers.

In 1992, a mentor of mine, in the Air Force, got me involved in a volunteer leadership role with a professional military organization.

I completely failed in the position.

But, I didn’t quit. I stuck with that organization as an active leader through 2008 (my retirement). In fact, I’m still a life member and assist other leaders now and again.

When I started out as a volunteer leader, I knew nothing about volunteering or leadership — I was just a young junior enlisted member.

What I learned … unimaginable.

Today, I run two nonprofit organizations that my wife and I founded. We keep them small and serve niche needs in our community.

It’s our way we give back constantly to our community. Better than giving to a faceless charity with zero control on how your money and efforts are spent, huh?

Want to learn how to lead?

Lead volunteers.

Want to learn how to lead an organization.

Become a volunteer leader of a nonprofit.

The perfect place to start is Toastmasters International. Their nonprofit program has a leadership and speaking tracks that teaches you how to be a great leader.

What have been your volunteer experiences?

Is consistency key?

Pre-COVID Boss to Employee: We need to be consistent in our operations, processes, and products.

Post-COVID Boss to Employee: Consistency in our operations, processes, and products is killing us.

Consistency is Key   — Right?

But, what if it isn’t?

What if Consistency is Killing  Your Business?

Consistency essentially means to do things the same…right? And that’s a good thing! Or is it? 樂

As businesses all over the world ran headlong into COVID-19, many of them tried to continue doing what they’ve always done…regardless of the changing environment.

Innovative companies — maybe not so consistent companies — quickly adjusted and continued to operate.

So, is consistency really key or what?

Many a business has been left behind due to consistency … Blockbuster, Kodak, KMart, etc.

Standard work is good…yes. Having consistency in operations, processes, and products is good. As long as your constantly evaluating effectiveness and can quickly change with the environment.

Is it time to reevaluate consistency?

Does Your Internet Suck?

How’s your internet service holding up during these times?

We live out on our horse ranch, north of San Antonio TX. I wouldn’t say that we live in the country, but we’re certainly not in any city limits.

Right now, internet service is massively important.

And honestly, our service could be a lot better.

Last night, we were doing a group mentoring session over Zoom and my connection was horribly unstable and kept dropping.

How many other people are finding their internet service has become their Achilles Heal during these trying times?

Next Ripple for Coronavirus

For many people, monthly bills are due soon: rent, car, accounts, etc.
Why is this important?

Ripples in the pond.

This is when the economy is going to start feeling the crunch.

With so many people out of work and so much turmoil in business, everyone will start making some financial decisions.

To pay or not to pay.

It’s now that the true economic impact of coronavirus is going to start showing up.

Consider this, 3.3M — record numbers — on unemployment. They’re going to make every dollar they have go as long as they can, right?

Businesses have a lot of monthly bills, but the future for their company isn’t clear and cash is king. They’ll probably hold off paying any bills right now — holding on to their money.

Also, people are going to start tightening their belts because of the lack of money coming in. So, significantly reduced spending will start occuring this coming month.

This coupled with people staying at home, so no gas being bought, no travel, and no entertainment.

Result: considerable less cash flow in businesses and more lay offs.

Vicious Circle.

Leadership After COVID-19

How will your leadership  behaviors change after COVID-19?

I’ve seen some pretty sad displays of business leadership during this crisis.

Governments hiding the truth. Business owners forsaking their people.

By now, most have seen the story of Chili’s in the Atlanta airport, where they had all their workers come in to clean the store and then laid them all off directly afterwards.

As a leader, have you taken a hard look at yourself in the mirror and witnessed how your behavior had changed in this crisis? Are you self-aware?

Jobless claims soared to 3.2M.

This week, I heard of a business leader moving all their sales staff from partial salary to 100% commission. This in a company that can’t sell anything right now. Might as well lay everyone off.

Then I’ve seen leaders that eliminated their entire salary and all the executives took a pay cut.

Some companies have cut all salaries in half during this crisis to keep everyone on staff and protect their jobs.

While others have used this as a way to eliminate people they wanted gone from their company all along.

Imagine what people will look for in a leader after this crisis? Especially at a time where companies will be hiring in the droves.

Getting Up To Speed

How do you quickly become an expert at work? 👨‍🎓🚇 And what does a subway have to do with it?

I’ve been in subways before, in Washington, DC, and in Paris, France. So, I have some experience with them.

However, the subway in New York City definitely provides a different level of understanding and expertise.

I took a little time to study the subway map and to research online how to navigate the subway.

This allowed my wife and I to be able to effectively navigate around town over the last two days. Numerous times, my wife was lost or would have got on the wrong train, but I was confident and got us where we needed to be.

Last night, she commented on my ability to quickly learn the system and get us around easily. The trick, she pointed out, was that I took a little bit of time to learn about the system.

Trust me, there’s no better school than doing something, as there were things I continued to learn riding the subway. But, I knew enough to start and be successful and that helped me learn from there.

How do you quickly get up to speed on something and how does it work?

Any tips or tricks you would care to share?

That’s your marketing plan?

🤔 Are you considering writing a book? 📖 Start with marketing it! 📢

On Facebook, this morning, I saw someone post, “I just published my book, can someone tell me how to market it.”

Too late! ⏰

If you are considering writing a book — I mean it’s a twinkle in your eye — start marketing your book first!

If you wait…your too late!

The first step is to define and hyper-focus on your audience — write the book for them.

Build your social media connections around that audience and develop qualified leads as you write.

Close to final draft, start building excitement with updates, videos, and snippets. Pull pre-release readers to test your book. Send it to someone influential for the Foreword.

Have a pre-release party and make the book available for pre-sale and become a bestseller prior to release.

Have big social fanfare, public service announcements, presentations, and book signings at final publication.

How do I know all this? I did the same as that person in 2012 when I published One Dead Marine, my first book.

Success takes time

True Success … for most of us … takes time! 🏅⏰

“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” Vincent Van Gogh

This is not a brag fest email–just sharing a personal success story. It’s about being consistent and constant, while focusing on things bigger than yourself.

For 30 years, I’ve been building my knowledge, skills, and experiences in business improvement. For 16 of those years, I’ve been following a personal 20-year strategic plan.

Three years ago, I had great conversations with a company that was doing incredible things and was faced with incredible opportunities. Our timing wasn’t right.

However, I followed this company for the past three years, watched their progress, and stayed in touch.

Two months ago, the company reached out — they had been watching me on LinkedIn too. Our conversations three years ago made more sense now — they were ready.

This week, I started working with them on a strategic engagement and it is so incredibly exciting! My 30-years’ experience is coming to bear on a company that truly appreciates me and what I have to offer.

I am looking forward to huge successes with them!
