Spot the risk!

What’s wrong with this picture? Can anyone spot  the risk? Why do we care about pans in business? 樂

If you’re a cook, or a parent of young kids, you probably noticed the potential issue.

For many, this obvious flaw might have gone unnoticed.

See the handle of the gold pan? See how it protrudes out in front of the stove?

This presents a potentially unsafe situation. Someone could easily bump the handle and knock the hot pan and its contents onto themselves or the floor. A child, being ever inquisitive, might reach up and grab the handle.

So, to be safe, you keep the handles turned to the side to help prevent an avoidable bad situation.

Why is this important in business?

How often do you take the time to study your company and assess your potential risks?

Do you have any pans on the stove that might be accidently bumped and burn someone?

Disaster, crisis, and risk management is a very important part of running a business. Unfortunately, business owners often have trouble seeing the forest through all the trees.

Annually, a business should examine its company and the environment, identify risks, determine likelihood and impact, and establish mitigation strategies.

Are their any pans protruding in your business?

Coaching Approach

One-on-one (1:1) coaching versus group coaching. Which do you like better? Why?

I’m examining the differences in coaching models and would love your thoughts. Here are some of mine:

Cost: Being coached 1:1 (privately), should essentially cost more than a group session –right? In reality, group coaching should be more lucrative for a coach, if you have enough participants. Plus, it’s less expensive for the participants. Though, you might need a room for a group, where 1:1 can be much easier.

Content: 1:1 seems more specific to the needs of the individual. Group coaching seems more like training and follows a loose agenda. 1:1 seems more personal. The coach probably needs to work more on engaging content with a group.

Mastermind: When you have a group, you have more opinions to share and discuss. In a 1:1 situation, the coach is essentially your only source, but you expect them to be the expert.

Value: I know that value is always measured from the customer’s point of view, but I think value depends on what you want from coaching. One might value cheaper sessions that have a lot of group interaction. Where another might value privacy and targeted advice.

What are your thoughts?

Being Curious

Being Curious 獵 might be one of the most important ♟ skills someone can possess!!!

Are you naturally curious?

When someone says something, is your first instinct to ask, “Why?”

Asking, “Why,” versus simply accepting the response 樂  can be a very powerful tool.

How do you build 料 this muscle?

Do you find people who ask, “Why,” all the time annoying?

What shuts down curiosity mire than anything for you?

Mask Shaming

Well, it looks like Mask Shaming has become a thing…

I’m hearing from people personally and seeing posts on social media of people shaming others not wearing masks in public.

So, when all this started, the governments were like, “Don’t go out and start wearing masks, they don’t work.”

Then the governments were like, “Stop buying up all the masks, you’re depleting the supply for health care workers.”

Then the governments were like, “We don’t have enough masks for health care workers and we’re engaging companies to adjust manufacturing processes to make them.”

Now the governments are like, “We recommend everyone wear a mask when in public.”

This week, Laredo TX, the first in the US to do so, made it illegal for people to be in public without a mask — up to a $1K fine. LA in CA instituting the same rule today.

Oh, by the way, Laredo only had 18 confirmed cases when they passed that ruling.

Suddenly, anyone not wearing a mask has become a pariah in the community.

Good luck finding a mask!

Leadership After COVID-19

How will your leadership  behaviors change after COVID-19?

I’ve seen some pretty sad displays of business leadership during this crisis.

Governments hiding the truth. Business owners forsaking their people.

By now, most have seen the story of Chili’s in the Atlanta airport, where they had all their workers come in to clean the store and then laid them all off directly afterwards.

As a leader, have you taken a hard look at yourself in the mirror and witnessed how your behavior had changed in this crisis? Are you self-aware?

Jobless claims soared to 3.2M.

This week, I heard of a business leader moving all their sales staff from partial salary to 100% commission. This in a company that can’t sell anything right now. Might as well lay everyone off.

Then I’ve seen leaders that eliminated their entire salary and all the executives took a pay cut.

Some companies have cut all salaries in half during this crisis to keep everyone on staff and protect their jobs.

While others have used this as a way to eliminate people they wanted gone from their company all along.

Imagine what people will look for in a leader after this crisis? Especially at a time where companies will be hiring in the droves.

Never Forget

I didn’t post anything anything yesterday in remembrance if 911…and I’m ashamed. 🙁

One of my connections, Jake Bjorseth, had a profound post this morning about growing up in a world where terrorism is a norm. He was 17 months old when 911 occured.

See, as a 21-year veteran, I was deeply involved. I’ve seen the impact and lost friends to 911, the bombing of the USS Cole and Khobar Towers. Even more in Desert Storm I and II and the many wars fought since then.

I was stationed in Germany on 911. A Public Affairs officer from down the hall ran into our office and told us to get down to their office immediately. We walked in as the second plane hit the towers.

Once we realized it was real, the base–all bases across the world were mobilized. The United States was under attack on U.S. soil!

I was to fly to DC the next day, but all flights were grounded and I didnt fly out until the 21st.

I remember the patriotism felt across the nation and the support from the world.

Being someone deeply impacted and who painfully remembers the impact of 911, it is my responsibility to make sure you understand and never forget.

I’m sorry I let you down. Lest We Forget!

Leadership Development

Leadership is not easy! True leadership that is! Anyone can be put into a leadership position, but few are good leaders.

Although there are natural leaders that are born and do great without effort, most must train and develop leadership muscles because it is not a natural talent or skill.

Sending someone to a leadership conference once a year is not developing leaders…you’re wasting money. Invest in your leaders with a complete leadership development program that is consistent, tailored and focused.

Organizational Myopia, in siloed organizations, starts with leaders that do not know what to look for or how to solve it. Step one is to read the book!

How’s your leadership development program?

Facebook and Instagram Password Snafu

Looks like it’s time to change your Facebook and Instagram passwords … again!

It’s all over the news this morning!!! Facebook confirmed yesterday, that it stored “hundreds of millions” of account passwords in plaintext FOR YEARS!!!

The discovery was made in January as part of a routine security review. Facebook said, “None of the passwords were visible to anyone outside Facebook.” Facebook admitted the security lapse, after they discovered passwords were accessible to approximately 2,000 engineers and developers.

“This caught our attention because our login systems are designed to mask passwords using techniques that make them unreadable,” said Canahuati, in the recent announcement. “We have found no evidence to date that anyone internally abused or improperly accessed them.”

Facebook said it will notify hundreds of millions of Facebook and Instagram of the exposure.

Recommendation: Change your passwords now!
