Breakthrough Silos

Breaking ⛏ Through Siloed  Organizations  First Requires Leadership Awareness! 類

Silos exist in practically every company, business, and organization. For profit or non profit … doesn’t matter. I’ve even identified silos in solo proprietorships.

The natural tendency of leaders is to “tear down the silos.”

Oh, I’m sure you’ve heard it all before … maybe you’ve even said it.

Everyone knows silos are bad!!!

Right?

Unfortunately, very few know why silos exist in the first place.

Unfortunately, very few understand why and who created the silos.

And, unfortunately, very few understand why playing “whack a silo” in your company doesn’t work!

The first step in dealing with silos in your organization is to learn why they formed in the first place and why you’ll NEVER get rid of them.

I challenge you to read Overcoming Organizational Myopia and learn not only why they form, but how to deal with them.

Increase your awareness!!!

Reopening

What’s your plan  to reopen your business? Do you even have one? 路‍♂️

Do you feel you even need a plan?

What’s a business to do…just reopen their doors and start serving customers again?

What precautions should you take?

Will your employees come back or do you need to hire and train new ones?

Will you be busy or slow?

How will people know you’re open?

Last week, I visited a restaurant that has reopened. It was lunch on Sunday.

Everything shined it was so clean.

On every table, they had paper napkins, a clear spray bottle of some liquid (unmarked), and a bunch of individual hand sanitizer gel packs.

I could see that some if the tables had been moved — probably six foot rule.

Our waiter wore a mask (all employees did)…no gloves. The bartenders wore gloves.

All total, aside from the two of us, there were nine patrons — yea, I counted.

Visible employees were a hostess, two waiters, two bartenders, and a manager.

The manager came by to thank us for visiting…he wore his mask under his nose to breathe better.

Do you think they had a plan?

If they did, do you think they were following it?

Should a business, reopening after the COVID Lockdown, have a plan to reopen?

Mask Shaming

Well, it looks like Mask Shaming has become a thing…

I’m hearing from people personally and seeing posts on social media of people shaming others not wearing masks in public.

So, when all this started, the governments were like, “Don’t go out and start wearing masks, they don’t work.”

Then the governments were like, “Stop buying up all the masks, you’re depleting the supply for health care workers.”

Then the governments were like, “We don’t have enough masks for health care workers and we’re engaging companies to adjust manufacturing processes to make them.”

Now the governments are like, “We recommend everyone wear a mask when in public.”

This week, Laredo TX, the first in the US to do so, made it illegal for people to be in public without a mask — up to a $1K fine. LA in CA instituting the same rule today.

Oh, by the way, Laredo only had 18 confirmed cases when they passed that ruling.

Suddenly, anyone not wearing a mask has become a pariah in the community.

Good luck finding a mask!

Positive or Negative?

So, are you being positive  through this or are you being negative ?

This morning, I woke up to a really negative post on LinkedIn about people being positive in this crisis.

He was complaining about people “predicting” what business will look like after this is over and how things will change.

His mantra was that this will last a long time and the world will be in ruins, so everyone should stop being positive and predicting the future.

Funny, but isn’t that what he’s doing … predicting the future?

However, his prediction was one of doom and gloom over positivity.

How about you right now?

16 days ago, we had our first day of over 1K of confirmed cases.

Everyone pretty much started working from home about that same time.

Yesterday, we had our largest number of confirmed cases, but the incubation period is 14 days. So, that’s not a huge surprise.

Look at China. On their worst day, their confirmed cases spiked to over 15K and then significantly dropped off.

Since then they’ve practically eliminated confirmed cases.

I’m going to continue to look to a positive future.

How about you?

Your mission statement  means everything to your company right now.杖

Is you mission statement just words that make you feel good?

Getting Up To Speed

How do you quickly become an expert at work? 👨‍🎓🚇 And what does a subway have to do with it?

I’ve been in subways before, in Washington, DC, and in Paris, France. So, I have some experience with them.

However, the subway in New York City definitely provides a different level of understanding and expertise.

I took a little time to study the subway map and to research online how to navigate the subway.

This allowed my wife and I to be able to effectively navigate around town over the last two days. Numerous times, my wife was lost or would have got on the wrong train, but I was confident and got us where we needed to be.

Last night, she commented on my ability to quickly learn the system and get us around easily. The trick, she pointed out, was that I took a little bit of time to learn about the system.

Trust me, there’s no better school than doing something, as there were things I continued to learn riding the subway. But, I knew enough to start and be successful and that helped me learn from there.

How do you quickly get up to speed on something and how does it work?

Any tips or tricks you would care to share?

Success takes time

True Success … for most of us … takes time! 🏅⏰

“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” Vincent Van Gogh

This is not a brag fest email–just sharing a personal success story. It’s about being consistent and constant, while focusing on things bigger than yourself.

For 30 years, I’ve been building my knowledge, skills, and experiences in business improvement. For 16 of those years, I’ve been following a personal 20-year strategic plan.

Three years ago, I had great conversations with a company that was doing incredible things and was faced with incredible opportunities. Our timing wasn’t right.

However, I followed this company for the past three years, watched their progress, and stayed in touch.

Two months ago, the company reached out — they had been watching me on LinkedIn too. Our conversations three years ago made more sense now — they were ready.

This week, I started working with them on a strategic engagement and it is so incredibly exciting! My 30-years’ experience is coming to bear on a company that truly appreciates me and what I have to offer.

I am looking forward to huge successes with them!

Forbes Expert Panel — Diversity

Seven Ways Leaders Can Encourage Diversity In The Workplace

❓ How is Diversity best defined?

❓ What are the benefits?

For a business to be able to have a diverse workplace, companies must address these questions and more.

I’m proud to be featured again on Forbes through the Forbes Coaches Council! Twice in one week — I must be doing something right?!?

I provided the sixth method: Be Constant And Consistent With Education!

Diversity—and inclusion, because you can have a diverse work center and not include everyone—starts with solid, constant and consistent education. This is not one training class and an annual refresher online. This is purposeful diversity and inclusion leadership growth—it should start before the individual becomes a leader and they should grow and build over time. – John Knotts, Crosscutter Enterprises
